Basalt Chopped Fiber — Advanced Concrete Reinforcement Fibers

Modern construction and engineering projects require modern solutions. Working with concrete means finding the best reinforcements to ensure longevity and site safety from construction through decades of use. At Basalt Engineering, the solution is simple — our full line of BASTECH® products is lighter, stronger and more sustainable than alternatives without being corrosive. When mixed with concrete, BASTECH® chopped fiber provides the ideal reinforcement without affecting workability or reliability.

What Are Basalt Fibers for Concrete?

We named our company Basalt Engineering because we specialize in one material, and one material only. Basalt rock is a highly versatile material sourced from natural volcanic rock. It is our material of choice for rebar, mesh, chopped fiber and more because it is:

  • Lightweight: Basalt is the lightest type of reinforcement available without sacrificing any other features. That makes it easier to use and can even reduce the risk of on-the-job injuries.
  • Durable: Basalt fibers are the reinforcement you need for lasting results. This material boasts an over 100-year lifespan to meet the pressing needs of your most intensive jobs.
  • Corrosion-resistant: Basalt is naturally resistant to environmental wear and chemical corrosion, preventing cracks and material breakdown over time.
  • Sustainable: If all its on-site benefits were not enough, basalt is also highly sustainable. It is a natural resource that produces 60% less carbon emissions than steel and is recyclable, making your products as eco-friendly as they are effective.

Our chopped fiber has been specially melted down and extruded into small, flexible fibers that mix easily into concrete and concrete admixtures. When mixed properly, it has little effect on flowability, creating a lighter, non-corrosive solution that improves operations without affecting the final product.

How to Use Basalt Fiber Chopped Strands in Concrete

Using BASTECH® chopped fiber is as simple as using any other concrete additive, with the additional benefit of being lightweight. Your team on the ground just has to:

  1.
    1. Measure: Depending on your concrete mix and applications, you may need anywhere from 1.5-10 pounds of chopped fiber per cubic yard (about 1-6 kilograms per cubic meter). Most projects require about 6-9 pounds per cubic yard.

    1. Mix: As you mix your concrete, slowly integrate the chopped fiber and continue mixing until it is evenly dispersed throughout to achieve uniform reinforcement.

    1. Make: Once your concrete is mixed, it is ready for use. Apply your mixture as you normally would for enhanced benefits now and far into the future.

Why Choose Chopped Basalt Fiber vs. Other Concrete Reinforcing Fibers?

Most projects today use steel- or fiberglass-reinforced materials, and our basalt fiber tech beats them both:

  •
    • Steel: While exceptionally durable, steel is also heavy and corrosive. It can make installation more challenging and dangerous for workers, and over time, it can react with concrete and break down.

    • Fiberglass: This material is lighter and more corrosion-resistant than steel, but it buckles in high-strain environments and carries the highest cost per unit. Furthermore, it is particularly susceptible to high temperatures and fire, making it an unappealing option for building construction.

With chopped basalt fiber, you get the strength of steel and more protection from corrosion than fiberglass. Where steel falls short and fiberglass caves under pressure, our natural solutions outperform every time.
